Monkeypox has been confirmed in two people from the same family in North Wales, UK. Officials say that the risk of its exposure to the general public is low. Health officials have also claimed that this virus has come to Britain from abroad. According to the report of British news website The Week, Public Health Wales says that it is believed that both infected may have been infected outside the UK. However, after the matter came to light, contact tracing has started.

What is Monkeypox?

According to WHO, monkeypox is an infectious disease spread from animals to humans. This disease often spreads in Central and West African countries and from here it spreads to other parts as well. This disease can be spread through direct contact with an infected animal. This disease also has symptoms similar to smallpox. Symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain, muscle stiffness, and weakness are seen in this disease.

How to know if you are infected?

According to the UK’s National Health Service, rashes start appearing in the body from the first to the fifth day. Initially, these rashes come on the face and then gradually spread all over the body. These rashes become red in color during the disease. Eventually, these rashes fall off like scabs.

How dangerous is this disease?

According to WHO, the death rate of this disease can go up to 11%. However, the good thing is that the vaccine that protects against smallpox is also effective against vaccinia monkeypox. According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), cidofovir, ST-246 prepared against smallpox, and Vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) is also effective against monkeypox.

This disease was spread in 1970

The monkeypox virus was first identified in 1970 in the African country of Congo. After that in 2003, this disease spread to many countries around the world including America.
